The Kindness of Strangers

My car broke down about 95% of the way home from work this afternoon. I had just pushed it around the corner off the main road when someone I didn’t know came over and helped push. They only lived a couple of doors down the street and helped push it in front of their place. The person was a mechanic of some sort and he ran inside and grabbed some tools and helped me to check where the problem was (given that I know little about cars). He confirmed that the power to the engine was okay then checked the fuel. No fuel coming out of the fuel filter. He grabbed some more tools and took the fuel filter off so he could disconnect the input pipe. Try again and no fuel getting there either. He then went so far as to take the cover off the fuel pump under the back seat to check if power was getting to the pumo (which it was). That makes the fuel pump the most likely problem and it probably saved me an hour or more in waiting for road service to tell me the same thing. Instead I was able to arrange a tow truck to tow the car to my regular mechanic and it was still early enough that we could arrange with him to expect it. In fact he was still there when we finally got the car to him and was kind enough to give me a lift home.

So this is a public thankyou to that person who came to my aide (and their family who also helped).
