Happy 25th Anniversary – WWW

While connecting computers together has been done since the late 1950s and the internet itself (although not yet by that name) dates back to the early 1970s, when most people today think of the internet they think of the World Wide Web. This isn’t even the most popular protocol used on the internet (email is far more popular) but it is the one that is now most closely identified with it. Who now remembers the many competing protocols of the 80s and 90s for sharing files on the internet – very few even though those alternatives still dominated for several years after the WWW browser (since renamed Nexus) was created (at the end of 1990). Many alternate browsers were created but it wasn’t until Mosaic was released that the web protocol started to gain ascendancy over the others. Happy 25th Anniversary – WWW
