Elizabeth Tower

I heard a quiz question on the radio earlier in the week where they asked what “Elizabeth Tower” is more commonly called. I still don’t know why they insisted on renaming St Stephen’s Tower at Westminster Palace to Elizabeth Tower in the first place given that the most prominent part of the palace visually is the clock at the top of the tower which as far as I am aware doesn’t have a name. Why didn’t they make it Elizabeth’s clock at the top of St Stephen’s Tower instead of renaming the tower. Not that either of those names will get used by the general public who usually just refer to the biggest bell that is in the tower that they can’t even see – Big Ben.
